Food

At Peterborough West Animal Hospital we carry a range of specialty foods for your pets specific nutritional needs. We also carry a range of diets catering to your pets at different stages of life. We have these diets available for healthy puppies and kittens, as well as adult and senior cats and dogs.

Xrays

Peterborough West Animal Hospital uses digital x-ray technology to manipulate and exchange images. This then enables us to email the xrays to specialists anywhere in the world. Digital x-ray machines have no toxic or dangerous chemicals that need to be disposed of. This not only eliminates exposure of our staff and your pets to these toxins but also protects the environment from them as well.

Surgery

We recommend pre-surgical bloodwork for all patients undergoing surgery, especially in geriatric animals. This blood work-up gives us a picture of your pets liver and kidney function, as well as detecting anemia. This allows us to take any necessary precautions prior to recieving an anaesthetic.

All pets undergoing surgery have the option to recieve intravenous fluids during surgery. This allows for adequate kidney profusion, maintains blood pressure, and gives us an IV access to administer emergency drugs if needed.

All patients undergoing anaesthetic and surgery are monitored by a Registered Veterinary Technician who monitors the heart rate, oxygen level and depth of anaesthetic.

All of our patients recovering from surgery are given post-operative pain medication that last 24 hours. This is to ensure that your pet can recover from surgery with minimal pain, and therefore begin healing. Additional pain meds are available, and recommended depending on the severity of your pets surgery.

All surgical patients are kept warm with blankets and oatbags when recovering from surgery. This helps to keep your pet warm and recover faster from the anaesthetic, by helping them maintain their body temperature. All patients are also walked individually on our spacious grounds, and given extra attention during their post operative stay.

Surgical Protocol

The night before your pets surgical appointment at Peterborough West Animal Hospital, we require your pet to be fasted. This means that they should not recieve any food past 6pm, and no water after 11pm, and nothing to eat or drink the morning of surgery.

Surgical admission is between 8am and 9am the day of surgery.

All animals who undergo major surgery remain in the clinic overnight. This is to ensure that your pet stays quiet through the night, and allows Dr. Sargent to preform post surgical examinations the morning after surgery, before sending your pet home.

When your cat comes in for a declaw they will be staying with us for two nights as it is a painful procedure that requires rest and pain medication over this time period to initiate the healing process.
