When Dian Fossey witnessed the dwindling number of mountain gorillas some 20 years ago she had a dream.  Her vision was to create a group of Veterinarians employed for the sole purpose of helping maimed or orphaned gorillas in the wild.  Thus the MGVP was born.

The Mountain Gorilla is still being slaughtered and sold as bush meat.  There are none in captivity and only 740 left in the wild.  We want to help.

Every year the staff and friends at PWAH hold a annual fundraiser for the Mountain Gorillas. This is our way of "giving back to the animals."  Our last effort in June 2010 raised $1116.00 bringing our total contribution over the past 4 years to $7,081.00!!  Many thanks to everyone that helped make the event a great success!  The money was used by the MGVP to provide much needed Veterinary care to gorillas in the wild.

We continue to collect used cell phones in which we recycle  in order to extract the coltan from them.   Coltan is an ore mined from the Gorillas habitat.  It is used in the making of cell phones, play stations, etc.  The mining destroys the Gorilla habitat, and as well, Gorillas are poached or eaten as bush meat where the coltan is mined.  Peterborough West Animals Hospital always has a recycle station available to you on site in our attempt to support the Toronto Zoo’s recycling efforts.
